Pimp and Promote!

We haven't done this in a while - So here are the rules:

How does this work?

To quote the genie in Aladdin, “There are a few provisos, a couple of quid-pro-quos…”

  • Pimp out somebody else’s work – this can be a favorite author, blogger, post or book you’ve read, a wonderful teacher or just someone who had profound influence on you as a writer or a person. Please limit your comments to one work.
    AND
  • Promote one of your projects that you’re excited about – a hobby, a blog, a book, or a new direction your writing is taking you. You decide. Just tell us about it in the comments! (Please restrain your enthusiasm to just oneof your WIPs.) The rest of us will jump in and “ooooh and ahh” at you, and likely promote your project even further because we’re just so darn excited today.

READY? GO!

    1. I have Orly's book in my Kindle. And you know that TRB pile is like 6 pages long in there. However, I will bump her up my list because I really want to read this book. It has all the stuff I like. 🙂

  1. Easy-peasy this time!

PROMOTE that I'm joining the Writers In the Storm ladies, which is like a total fan-girl getting asked to hang out with her favorite big-time authors. Um, yeah. Please! I'm looking forward to contributing and bringing in some fresh voices from time to time. And learning from the Masters who are already here. Thanks, WITS Wonderfuls!

PIMP the HIGHLAND BRIDES series from Elizabeth Essex, which includes a novella, two books, and more to come. I read through those delightful three stories in no time and thoroughly enjoyed the historical romance romp! https://www.amazon.com/Mad-Love-Highland-Brides-Book-ebook/dp/B01DI89LW8/

    1. We are delighted to have you, Julie!! And I love Elizabeth Essex. I ave the first one, but this is a great reminder to go back and read the others. WOO!

    2. Julie, you are a delight!!!! (and a brilliant writer in your own right!) Thank you for the 'pimp' and I will join your 'promote' in congratulating you for joining Writers In the Storm! Marvelous!!! xox
And thank you, Jenny. Has it really been two years since we met in San Diego. Time flies when you're on deadlines!!! Cheers!

      1. Right?? Time just gets faster and faster...it's pretty ridiculous. And p.s. the notebook you gave me is still one of my most prized possessions. I look things up in there often. Cheers to the books you are producing on these deadlines!

      1. Congratulations on your debut, Carrie Nichols. ! What a thrill. And I am a devoted pantser, but I will check out the online classes of the incredible Laura Baker. I always feel a bit guilty of poor preparation when I don't outline or think ahead.

  2. I want to PIMP the fabulous Laura Baker and her wonderful online classes through WriterUniv! Her Turning Points classes have helped me become a (sorta) plotter. https://writeruniv.wordpress.com/classes/master-class-turning-points/

I want to PROMOTE my own debut with Harlequin Special Edition. This is truly a dream come true. The Marine's Secret Daughter is available for pre-order and has the most wonderful cover ever thanks to the Harlequin Art Department! 🙂 https://www.amazon.com/Marines-Secret-Daughter-Small-Town-Sweethearts-ebook/dp/B073P6GJRN

    1. Congratulations on your debut, Carrie!! That's wonderful, and I love it that you put in the link so people can just CLICK. Brava. 🙂

I can't imagine anything turning me into a real live plotter but I will click the link to Laura Baker's course and check her out.

    2. It is a wonderful cover, Carrie. So full of happiness-that I bet you made them earn! I can't wait to read it. I'm with Jenny on the (sorta) plotter thing. I know I need to be a little less "free" than my previous pantser experiences, but I'm not sure if I want to cinch that corset yet.

  3. I want to PIMP the marvelous of Craig Childs and his book House of Rain, Tracking a vanished civilization across the American Southwest. His lyricism and research skills taught me more about the craft of writing than any writing class I have taken.Find out more at https://www.houseofrain.com

I want to PROMOTE the sequel to Learning Levitation inspired by my faithful writers group, Word Wizards, and my editor, Molly McCowan of Inkbot Editing. Without their enthusiasm and critical eyes I wouldn't attempt this project. Thanks, ladies. Let's see where this takes me!

  4. This is a decidedly cool thing to do, WITS! I want to promote/pimp History Imagined, a blog that I run in conjunction with two other authors of historical fiction, Becky Lower and Caroline Warfield. We write about what we discover through our research and/or whatever strikes our fancy, as long as it come from the past. In addition, we promote other authors of historical fiction through our Getting into Character feature. Find us here: https://historyimagined.wordpress.com/

I also want to mention/pimp/celebrate my just about completed WIP. Hallelujah!! The end is in sight! Miami Days, Havana Nights is a dual timeline novel featuring 1920's - 60's gangsters on the Gold Coast of Florida and a present day young, female history professor determined to suss out their secrets. While the novel is more historical fiction than traditional romance, a love story also winds through each timeline. After all, what would life be without someone to love?

    1. Historicals are my second favorite genre, Linda. (Weird for a science fiction freak, right?) I'm going to have to check out your blog. And, as I finalize the details for the release of my debut book, I celebrate your just-about-completed WIP! But I have to warn you, there's still a lot more work than you ever imagined out there...

  5. Wow, what fun! Definitely have to check out these things...meanwhile, I would like to:

PIMP: author Meg Mitchell Moore http://www.megmitchellmoore.com/ I have read all of her novels, and I promise that EVERY ONE OF THEM is the perfect antidote to whatever politics/Hollywood scandals are getting you down--these are books with great character development, and are full of heart and humor.

PROMOTE: Blogs like this one, where writers can share their opinions, challenges, and successes. You have kept me going through many a confidence crisis. Thank you, all of you Writers in the Storm!

    1. Thanks for the tip on a new author, Holly. And thanks for the kudos to WITS. Readers and participants like you make it happen!

  6. Oh, I love pimping other people's stuff! I'm a bit self-conscious about promoting my own, however, so this is perfect!
PIMP: One of my favorite authors: Ted Dekker. His books are amazing... they inspired me so much when I was first starting to write. He's also coming out with a new series next year!! I'm very excited. 😀
PROMOTE: My own blog: https://forhisglorydotblog.wordpress.com. I just started a blog series about getting ready for NaNoWriMo, and have been told it's really helpful. I also blog about what the Gospel has to do with writing.

  7. PIMP: Carol Award-winning author Jennifer Lamont Leo! I am hosting her for an interview this week and a giveaway of her book, You're the Cream in My Coffee! A fun, inspirational romp through Chicago in 1928! http://www.normagail.org/youre-the-cream-in-my-coffee/
PROMOTE: My debut novel, Land of My Dreams, winner of the 2016 Bookvana Award, contemporary inspirational women's fiction is now just $.99! https://www.amazon.com/Land-Dreams-2016-Book-Selection-ebook/dp/B01ENKEL02

    1. Congratulations on your debut novel, NormaGail! I'll have to drop by for that interview. Thanks for letting us know about both.

  8. PIMP: I'd love to pimp the talented author and amazing teacher Ara Grigorian. His new book, Ten Year Dance, releases TODAY! If you ever have the opportunity to learn from this man. I enthusiastically suggest to take it! http://www.aragrigorian.com/

PROMOTE: In an effort to break through my introvert shell and get comfortable talking about my books, I have been doing short Facebook Live videos. To reach people not on Facebook (there are still people who are not on Facebook, right?), I have also created a YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUFcpgt2-o2HNW41fNY_--w

    1. Wow, two great tips, Eldred! I don't know if I'm brave enough for a youtube channel of my own!

      1. I'm not as brave as you might think. My dive into the world of YouTube wasn't so much a choice as it was an edict from several people who don't have a social media footprint. They wanted someplace they could see the videos without signing into an account. 🙂

    2. Oh, you are not alone in the introversion thing. But I think it's a great idea for you to break out with the videos. Checking our your YouTube channel...

    3. Go, Eldred!! You video Braveheart, you. 🙂 I'm seriously proud of you that you have done these. And thanks a bunch for the reminder on Ara's book. He's coming to visit my writing chapter in November and I can't wait!

  9. I've been busy reading speculative fiction for several months, getting ready to launch a writers' cooperative (see my promote next.) And it is surprising to me that the book and author I want to pimp this morning is Garth Stein and his incredible story, The Art of Racing in the Rain. I found my copy this last weekend in a box of other books stored due to a recent shuffle of furnishings, and I grabbed it up, irritated at whoever put it in there - me, the prime suspect. So, I curled up for an hour and read a couple of chapters. I am an animal lover, a dog-worshiper (no whispering talent do I actually have - no one ever minds me *insert lamenting sigh here*.) Just thinking about how the book works, how Stein uses the dog's perspective to tell the poignant story of a human in emotional pain, is so brilliant. Also, as I remember, this book made me laugh and literally sob at the end. So, for the next couple of days, I'm going to bug all my friends and family to read Garth Stein's story.

I'd like to promote a cooperative that I and five other authors have developed. http://www.speculativefictionwriters.com . We are looking for fellow writers of intriguing stories to cross-promote and cross-inspire to write and market stories with supernatural, horror, sci-fi, speculative historicals and mystery elements. If you have a vetted short story with intriguing elements we would love to post it on our site and social-media blitz it along with our stories. This is a great time to talk speculative - Halloween month, and all.

    1. Ah, Kris. You had me at speculative fiction. A few years ago I explained what I write to an editor and was told, "Oh, you write speculative fiction." I looked up the then-nebulous definition. Well, I think the definition is still nebulous. Your site is great--sucked me in to read every page! Thanks! We need to stay in touch.

    2. Kris, that is an amazing and emotional book. We are dog people in this house, so when I gave a signed copy to my wife, I made sure she had a full box of tissues!

  10. I have to PIMP the last book I edited: my husband's newest, Playing Saint | All Soul's Day. It will be out in time for Halloween, and believe me it is the perfect nail-biting suspense (complete with macabre murders and spiritual forces at work) for the spooky season. Just check out the cover: http://amzn.to/2gKR6pn

And I'll PROMOTE my collection of short stories, This Elegant Ruin...and other stories (https://www.amazon.com/This-Elegant-Ruin-other-stories/dp/0692232729) for those of you who don't like to read about serial killers and would rather something a little less stressful, but hopefully no less engaging. 🙂

  11. PIMP: I'm in the middle of reading children's author Yvette Carol's 2nd book in The Chronicles of Aden Weaver. It's for kids 9 to 13 and is a fun read: https://www.amazon.com/Sasori-Empire-Book-Chronicles-Weaver-ebook/dp/B075PMTN2H/

Promote: This was a hard decision. I'm getting back to blogging, have a children's book (coauthored under BBH McChiller) and am working on my YouTube channel. I hope I'm picking the right one, my YT channel. This is a funny true story. If you need a giggle, I hope you'll check it out: https://youtu.be/UoLsZwbsEXE

  12. My PIMP: Readers Coffeehouse is a fabulous Facebook group started by our own Laura Drake. Lots of great book recommendations and book-related chatting: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ReadersCoffeehouse/

And my PROMOTE: BLOOM, an amazing FB group run by the Tall Poppy Writers (Laura and I are both involved with that group). Each of the Tall Poppies takes turns hosting and there are always great discussions and giveaways. It's a wonderful place to relax and enjoy on social media: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Bloomwithtpw/

    1. Thanks for sharing two more places for us to hang out, Orly! At this rate, I'm going to have to collect some delivery numbers.

  13. Thank you for the 'pimp', Lynn! You rock. WITS are a brilliant collective, so my 'promote' will be to tweet this post. 🙂 And, from reading these comments, I have a lot more books to read!

  14. My PIMP: I just finished Sherry Ficklin's Queen of Someday, a YA Historical Romance set in Russia during Catherine I's reign. I was only going to read a chapter a night, but I caved and finished the last half of the book on Saturday (instead of taking care of my TO DO list for P.R.I.S.M.).

My PROMOTE: My debut YA science fiction romance, P.R.I.S.M., is available for pre-order on Amazon. The paperback link is due up within forty-eight hours, if you want to hold the book in your hands.

  15. PROMO: If you haven't met author Barbara Ann Mojica or read her fabulous "Little Miss History" books, it's time you did. Get the kids hooked on history and hooked on books https://bamauthor.me/two-new-awards-for-little-miss-history/ PIMP As for me, I've been working on poetry for an upcoming collection. Here's one to celebrate the season, enjoy and get the kids writing too.. https://4writersandreaders.com/2016/10/19/have-fun-writing-haiku-get-the-kids-writing-too/

Thanks so much for the opportunity to share. <3 Bette

  16. PIMP - I have loved working with and meeting Sheila Grice and Denise Covey through Margie Lawson's Immersion class. On top of Margie's wonderful teachings, these two ladies have opened my eyes to better structure in my work and taught me a thing or two about grammar. Look out for Sheila's debut novella at Christmas time - Three Snowy Nights.

PROMO - If you like steamy workplace romances with a powerful woman and a hot British hotelier my novel "Propositions" is on sale at the moment for only $0.99 http://amzn.to/2yt1zz9

  17. PROMO: I love fellow Aussie author, Amy Andrews' books. Her style is super steamy and funny, and I just adore her new Sydney Smoke Rugby series (you don't have to know anything about rugby to enjoy them). Here's the link to the latest book, Playing With Forever - https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Forever-Sydney-Smoke-Rugby-ebook/dp/B075D8XVT2
PIMP: My debut contemporary romance/romcom novel, Girl on a Plane, is on sale for only 99 cents in the US. It's the winner of the HarperCollins UK We Heart New Talent contest. Buy links - books2read.com/GirlOnAPlane
Thanks for this fun chance to share!

  18. Umm, rugby players. And I've read something, somewhere, about your book Cassandra. Going to the link now. I always need a romcom in that tall TBR pile that Laura talked about!

  19. I have to promote one of my favorite authors Rebecca Zanetti. She gave a wonderful keynote address this past weekend at Emerald City Writers' Conference where she left us all laughing and inspired that we can do it too! Check out her Scorpius Syndrome series - intelligent females, strong males, high stakes, and a very believable situation.

      1. In her keynote she told us all the things she did wrong, and of course she ended up succeeding, so it was very hopeful for those of us who aren't there yet. She also did a workshop on writing those bad boys she does so well.

  20. Love this! I want to pimp the delightful books of my fabulous writing mentor Romy Sommer, especially her Rita Finalist work Not a Fairy Tale. She's worked tirelessly with me, dragging me from 5 chapters to finished and then totally revised WIP, which is now being submitted as Love Is a Filing Cabinet. She's a South African, but she managed to push this Nebraskan. P.S.: We finally met for the first time this month face to face in Johannesburg.

I want to promote a holiday book my little writing group put out a couple of years ago. We decided we should stop just learning and start actual writing--and we put together a Christmas anthology, Love and Merry Christmas. We dedicated the first Real Money to a Lincoln literacy organization, and the book boosts our individual and collective desire to write more and better!
