What a great, timely post! As a matter of fact, I am in the process of selecting a professional editor for a novella (my supposed e-publisher, who had in-house editing, seems to be, ah, well, not answering emails but I'm not bitter) and your comments were spot on. I need a pro, not a friend. NaNo actually didn't change my writing very much, maybe a little extra guilt for taking a day off. Jenny Hansen is right -- focus is key. Thanks, Piper!

Glad you enjoyed it. It's hard to get into that mindset, but once we are there, it's amazing what we can get done.

LOL. My hubby would say I don't resist that urge with him at all. He's just happy if I don't split too many hairs.

Glad you enjoyed the post. It's amazing how much we can miss, even after several passes.

I'm just now coming around to the "every month is NaNoWriMo" stance. It was astonishing how much writing I got done when I learned how to focus on it. Focus is key. :-)

Thanks for this delightful post. I just broke up your paragraphs a bit so all your gems could stand out better.

Thanks, Piper!

A couple of points in your post stood out: "every month is Nanowrimo" and "Unless we actually have an agent or editor chomping at the bit for the manuscript, we should let it sit a year while writing more books." I am always amazed at how blind I am to the deficiencies in my work while I'm on the first editing pass.

On a lighter note, what does a recovering attorney do when the urge to object strikes?
