I haven't realized a profit in any of the last six years so I think that he's up on the information on what constitutes a "business" versus a "hobby". Either way, I think that it's unfair. Do businesses like Amazon and Walmart have to abide by the same rules? Probably not.

The list of expenses in the post should help you make sense of the dreaded folder. However, before you go through all that itemization, add up the big receipts (if you can) and figure out whether you might just want to take the standard deduction this year. If you've bought anything big like a car for business, or if you and your wife own real estate, it's likely you will want to add up all those expenses and work with your accountant on using 199A to your advantage.

In looking for your tax person, get an established CPA with good reviews and referrals and make sure they really like people and are responsive to you. The best accountants will have these two qualities. This person is going to be the shield between you and the IRS and you want to be sure you trust them. And this year, ask about their tax season prep in regards to the TCJA because it matters.
