In reply to drjohnnd. No kidding! Triggers do add complexity though to showing emotions, so they can sometimes be hard to do well.

In reply to ecellenb. Yes! And fear is a good one because it can be so specific. Emotions are universal, but fear is one that can elicit this visceral response in people, right!

Great post!
I've used emotional triggers while writing fiction but didn't think about what I'd done until reading your post.
When I ponder primary emotions I immediately think of fear, which drives a lot of secondary emotions depending on the fear. Interesting!
