In reply to Lisa Norman. Same here, Lisa. I always start with the main character. I'm a died in the wool pantser, but over time I'm becoming more of a plantser. I liken it to using a compass rather than a GPS. I know the direction I need to go and about where I'd like to end up, but I don't the route I'll take to get there...and "there" often changes somewhere along the line, leading me to a better destination.

In reply to Ellen Buikema. The road blocks are what give a story teeth, especially if they are one that we ourselves have faced in the past. If it was as easy as solving one or two issues, then we wouldn't have much of a story, right?

Excellent summary of a solid approach! I tend to be a pantser. I start with character: who and what they want, and then I do my best to frustrate them!
