I have to admit that that writing a first draft is one of my favorite things. I enjoy the flow and the exploration. I'm still working on finding that same joy in editing that draft into something useful.

But as I write out the story, I can skip over the bits that get me stuck, and once I find that satisfying end, I can go back and fill in the other points.

This is one of my guilty pleasures because I have too many first drafts!

That's a great idea, Denise. My brain would see post its as far less fear-inspiring than a blank page or a manuscript page. I'll be trying that in the future. Thanks.

I'll try to figure out what's going wrong by writing some things on post-its to see if I'm missing something, why it's not working, did I get myself into a corner, or what have you. It can help. Then you can figure out what to do.

The ONLY way I can pull myself to the end of a first draft is by free-writing the first big rush of what I know happens, figuring out some story structure and turning points, and then dividing the rest of the story into scenes. That lets me keep the spontaneity by just picking the scene to write that day.

Otherwise, it is a constant exercise in re-writing for perfection and never finishing anything. It used to be super frustrating to me.
