I think writer's block often masks other issues. I know it has for me. In March of 2025 my third book in the series was ready to publish. My husband passed away that same month. I eventually published my book but here I am, over a year later not having written another word (other than a paragraph or two). I now question whether I'll ever feel the joy I felt when I was in the midst of writing a story.

In reply to denise. Denise, I totally agree with you, which is why I looked into some of the reasons in order to help other writers to understand and push past those reasons. There is so much more to this, I know, but this article is just the beginning of the journey to understanding.

I think there can be a short writer's block, but if it lingers, there is an underlying reason or reasons.

I tend to feel that Writer's Block is masking another issue. For example: one of my slow-downs with a book related to confronting the story of my mother's death. Unrelated to that book, I've definitely faced the years long process of finishing a book that could look like Writer's Block from the outside and I think you've covered the reasons well here.

In reply to Karen. That is a very good one! Back when I was writing my first series, I felt this guilt often when taking time away from my husband and back then, my son was quite young. However, now days, the people around me know that a "PJ who is writing regularly is a happier person." And now that I've moved past my writer's block, I'm more prolific in every aspect of my life. A Win Win for everyone!

In reply to Karen. I carried this guilt for years, Karen. I had to stop thinking about my writing as a hobby and as a second career, and it helped me alleviate the guilt.
