The Writerly Things WITS Bloggers Are Grateful For

Image of a paper heart upon which the words are Thankful Grateful Blessed. The heart is held upright on a table by a clothespin. Rows of wads of yellow paper fill the table in the background.

Today at Writers In The Storm we’re giving thanks for the “writerly” things and people who help us put words on the page. We're also opening the door for our readers! Share your gratitude for all the writerly gifts, lessons, and wins, down in the comments!

In many respects this has been a challenging year. I am grateful for the support of family, friends, and the writing community. All help to keep me motivated, sending along the occasional nudge to move forward.

Cheers!

Jenn

I'm grateful for writing friends and amazing critique partners. Without them, I'm not sure I would still be writing. They keep me motivated and honest when I need it most. The writing community is a special place filled with people who will lift you up, talk you down, and help you every step of the way.

And I'm also grateful for getting to explore so many new creative endeavors in the past year, and finding my passion again.

As always, I am thankful to be on the other side of cancer. I just got my "one year later" all-clear checkup. I'm also thankful to finally have a writing space in my new house, after moving from the West Coast to the East Coast over the summer. I gave up my office to my daughter when she was born. Now fourteen years later, I'm finally getting it back!

Finally, I'm super grateful that we got to see so much family (and great friends) on our way east. We visited with nearly 100 people we don't often see during this move, and it was glorious.

I'm grateful to all of my students and clients who share their stories and their adventures in the tech world with me. I'm grateful for every patient one of you as we process through the rapid changes in the writing tech world.

And surprisingly - I'm grateful for all of the new toys we have. Each day is an opportunity to explore and learn new things.

I am insanely grateful for my newly refurbished office. It's been a long time in transition. I'm thankful to be able to take part in this exciting era for writers and readers. As frustrating as I find it sometimes, technology has changed our world for the better and continues to change it. Finally, I'm grateful for the WITS blog because it encourages me to revisit how I do my writing and to learn skills from other writers.

  1. Ian grateful for WITS because it keeps connected to my writing life and inspires and supports me! I keep lists of resources, craft technique, writers to read, etc. and you all are a wellspring! So grateful.

  2. Grateful for SO many things - the amazing writers I've met on this journey (probably 30-35 years worth!) For the readers, who see themselves on our pages. For making it to 70,and still able to do what I love!

    Life is so good.

  3. I have much to be grateful for, writing-wise, as the year chugs along and the new year is soon upon us. My novel, The Wedding Dress Quilt, was published in August by C&T Publishing. I’ve been speaking for groups all over Texas; the reception has been glorious and heartwarming. Then, 30 days after the pub date, C&T offered me a second contract, this time for a series. Ya know that phrase of being over the moon? When I learned they wanted a series, I was over the whole galaxy. I’m grateful and humbled. Book two is well underway.

  4. I am grateful for the many years of education and wisdom I’ve gleaned from this blog. It’s been a major part of my writing journey and I’m so thankful you ladies are still keeping it up!

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  5. Extremely grateful for the publication of my new historical fiction novel Time Enough, through @OprellePublishers, coming January 1st. I am also grateful to Writers In The Storm for all of the great information over the years. I rely on connections like these for information and encouragement. All my best to Jenny for her one-year cancer-free check-up. This year, I had my three-year clearance. Such a blessing and makes one appreciate every single day even more. Writing has kept me grounded through many storms, including losing my home in a storm, which I know others have suffered this year. Thinking of them at this time, also.

    1. Lise, congratulations on the novel! So sorry to hear about the home, but yes... cancer free does put a lot into perspective. Happy Thanksgiving!

    2. Congratulations on being cancer free. I'm so sorry about your home but admire your ability to stay grounded and able to count your blessing and think of others through all your challenges. Happy Thanksgiving, Lise.

  6. I'm thankful for finding a site where I can express my thoughts about writing to writers. Thanks to all who make this possible. Best.

  7. I am joyously grateful for the blogging opportunity on an award-winning platform that you ladies have given me these past two years and into the future. I'm exceedingly grateful for the group of writers that I meet with every day via video as we write together. And, I'm thankful for friends, family, and readers who have supported my career over the years and who are as excited as I am for this new turn on this continuing journey. Happy Thanksgiving!

  8. I am thankful for professional writers like Harvey Stanbrough. He and his blog have been a tremendous help to me. I cannot thank him enough for the time he takes to share with others the things he learned along the way. He is very open and honest. The writing challenges he offers have by far been the most help to me. Following his blog and challenges has developed me into a much better story teller. I have learned more. Have written more than I ever thought possible. I have published in a few zines and sold to a couple anthologies. I thank him that he is so generous with his time and efforts and he ask for nothing, except for maybe a few bucks a month to follow his substack and he likes to hear how your writing is going as well. A lot of times people lik e him don't get enough recognition and it is nice to be able to share this with you on your blog. Thank you for that as well. HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🦃

    1. I, too, can vouch for Harvey's substack channel. There's a ton of information on his site, whether for the beginning or the established writer. He smashes many of the writing myths, and encourages others to do the same - and I tend to agree with him. Go over and check him out.

  9. Hi from Sandra from down under Australia. I’m grateful for belonging to WITS: as although far away, you have managed to encourage me to never give up writing ✍️. I’m super excited to announce that I’ve just completed my Autobiography. There is lots of tweaking going on; but the feedback has lifted my spirits enormously. I’m facing challenges in health department and am Carer for my husband/best friend, plus anxiety with family in a war zone. Now I’m hoping that good qualified people will help me get published and out there in next few months. Writers are a special type of person, and we’re made up of stories, so it’s vital we continue to tell them.

  10. I am grateful for all the writers who share their journeys, their triumphs, their hints and tips, and their experiences on this blog and other blogs across the internet. I can find out things about writing, business, art and creativity that I had never heard before through the magic of a search engine.

I am grateful for the expansion of ideas and the expansion of opportunity that talking to and learning from so many people has helped me personally this past year (and previous years, too!). And that I have been able to find the processes that work best for me, personally, out of those.

Among my favorites, beyond the current blog, is the MadGeniusClub blog and The New Daily Journal blog, as well as Team and More website.

  11. I was inspired by Dean Wesly Smith to just sit and daily write without looking back.
His approach of writing into the dark, which I dutifully follow has lifted me from an overly analytical writer with many revisions, to one who concentrates on production and trusting my unconscious to do all the heavy lifting.

In that vein, I also want to thank Harvey Stanbrough at thenewdailyjournal.substack.com/ for daily reinforcing this lesson and taking a sincere interest in all of us writers.

No matter what the question I have, when I send him an email, he will respond in a few hours with a helpful answer.

This is something that I value in our current world of growing impersonal interactions.

May we all enter a New Year where we do our best writing.

  12. Welcome to the East Coast, Jenny. Glad you made it to the one year mark of clear. Thanks for all you do.

Ellen, Jenn, Lisa, and Lynette, thank you for all you do.
